1853-54 U.S. Sealing Voyage aboard Oriental (Captain John A. Heard)

Notable for discovery of Heard Island, a center for the American sealing industry which sent over 43 voyages for sealing here as well as in Kerguélen and its elephant seals. Heard coordinated closely with Matthew Fontaine Maury in reporting wind and current patterns, and following a much more southerly route to the Far East.
