1771-74 French Naval Expeditions. Yves-Joseph de Kerguélen-Trémarec aboard Fortune and Gros Ventre (1771-72); aboard Roland, Oiseau and Dauphine (1773-74)

The first of these expeditions saw the discovery of the Kerguélen Islands and its substantial seal population. On the second voyage he found the land and weather so unattractive that Kerguélen renamed the islands the Land of Desolation.
